An Iridescent Flame: A Tensegrity Candle Holder
This prototype candle holder is a unique interplay of design, light, and tension, crafted from five equal circular panels connected by an elastic rope that creates a dynamic sense of tensegrity. The design leverages the tensile strength between these interconnected parts to maintain both flexibility and stability. The primary material is a dichroic filter, which adds an ethereal quality to the structure by reflecting and refracting light in a spectrum of vivid colors.
In daylight, the dichroic material transforms the object into a captivating play of colors, casting vibrant, ever-changing reflections onto surrounding surfaces. Depending on the angle from which it is viewed, the candle holder itself seems to shift in color, inviting a fresh visual experience from every perspective.
The structure’s versatility allows it to either lie flat or stand upright, with the weight of a candle placed centrally increasing the tension in the elastic rope. This added tension creates greater structural stability, demonstrating the ingenious balance achieved through tensile design principles.
